Inner West Council, being the owners of the site, engaged SJB Planning as the lead consultant to assess a series of DAs and Modification Applications for the redevelopment of the former Marrickville Hospital site located at 313-319 Marrickville Road and 182-186 Livingstone Road, Marrickville.

Known as the Marrickville Community Hub, the projects main DA included the construction of three (3) residential towers (11, 10 and 9 storeys respectively), a library, an auditorium, a public park, retail/commercial premises, basement parking and the adaptive reuse of retained heritage buildings. The less complex applications related to development for the purpose of early works, remediation, demolition and subdivision.

SJB Planning was responsible for project managing the assembly and overseeing a team of independent specialist consultants to carry out the assessment of the various applications.

The project attracted wide community interest and challenges related to ensuring the delivery and design excellence of the community infrastructure in a manner consistent with the applicable relevant statutory and policy provisions. Other key issues related to the scale and building height of the residential component of the development and the relationship with adjacent low-density residential development, conservation of the heritage buildings and the realisation of a significant urban tree canopy and high quality landscaping outcome for the site.

With the community facilities opening in August 2019, this award winning project has been widely regarded as a success and the facilities are highly utilised by the community.
