Kings DomainSouthbank VIC Australia
Kings Domain is a bold yet elegant residential tower breathing fresh life into the Dorcas Street and arts precinct in Melbourne’s Southbank.
This 23 storey development seeks to present as a multidimensional form. To the east, the building facade is flat and responds to its boundary condition and future, neighbouring building. However to the north, south and west, the building facade presents as a continuously curving gesture – the tower does not build out to the very corners of the site but rather softens its prominent street interfaces.
Residents amenities include an in-house concierge, a private lounge with an open fireplace, exclusive wine cellar access, lap pool, cinema, BBQ and entertainment facilities. The café at street level provides a welcoming and activated ground condition.
The most evident and striking feature of the building is its tessellating facade of stone and glass. Builder Hamilton Marino researched and developed a new natural stone product integrated into the facade system - the panels arranged in a subtly shifting pattern creating the effect of a ‘shifting skin’.
A black-steel crown completes Kings Domain, a transparent expression of the building’s curvaceous form that caps the building. Its sweeping, circular form is reflected in a similarly curved canopy form at ground level - a twisting expression of black-steel-and-glass that visually connects sky, tower and ground.
Ultimately the building's impact is both bold and quiet. The facade is devoid of colourful embellishment, its gently modulating skin of subtle tonal variation allows the building to present as a singular and legible architectural form. Kings Domain represents a shift away from the all-glass towers that predominate and exists as an enduring and site-responsive addition to Southbank
