Ashmore NSW Australia

SJB were engaged to prepare a concept design for EVE III as part of the City of Sydney’s commitment to design excellence. The site is located at the north-western extent of an industrial zone and plays an important role in the transition between the finer grain historic residential villages of Redfern, Erskineville and Newtown to the north and the industrial uses to the south. In addition, the precincts proximity to two train stations, Erskineville (north) and St. Peters (south), make the area ideally suited for higher density residential development, where the future residents can rely on sustainable modes of transport including cycling.

The proposed scheme responded to the industrial history of the Ashmore Precinct through the use of materials and form. Brick was chosen to reference the industrial heritage of the Sydney Brick Works located nearby, and fenestrations in the balcony and facade treatment alluded to the traditional terraces in a contemporary way. The scheme comprised a mix of one and two bedroom dwellings providing a total of 103 apartments, with 15 townhouses. Urban principles were integrated with a through-site link from Metters Street and the proposed pedestrian laneway to enable residents and locals to travel between the train stations and retail.
