A Private ResidenceSydney NSW Australia
The refurbishment of this grand heritage home was undertaken for a long-standing client of SJB. Having worked together on a number of commercial properties, where the design outcomes were driven by commercial requirements, it was very exciting for SJB to create an interior reflecting an emotional response.
Although grand in scale, the original house is characterised by a simplicity of detail, which SJB’s design has clarified further through minimal palette shifts expressed as large swathes of unbroken colour. Soft and expressive detailing provides a restrained and liveable sense of luxury, while wholly opulent furnishings defy era specific trends. Existing black-butt floors were returned to their former glory, while large Anatolian rugs in rich and muted tones create framed portions that contain dining and lounging areas while flowing seamlessly.
Bespoke cabinetry plays a pivotal role in the interior with slight Chinoiserie detailing, realised in silk and gold leaf, informing the living room cabinets, while burled maple has been used in the kitchen. In both cases the material’s natural beauty is key to the sumptuous and elegant presence these pieces evoke, while highly contemporary furniture items counter expectation. Of particular note is the bathroom were tiles, marble and timber are used as textural and sculptural elements to soften junctions and allow the materials a primary role.
