EsplanadeMelbourne, VIC Australia
Superbly located on the Esplanade, the beautifully appointed design intent was to create a home over four levels with contemporary lines of the home’s architecture to remain the hero, while warmth and texture were introduced as softening devices.
The design transforms from monolithic proportions to an intimate family home by addressing the way the family will use the space. This is achieved through specific designation, such as the basement as bar, theatre, pool room, and cellar while the upper level provides a formal iteration. As such, the way the home communicates, whether intimately or with grandeur, further delineates.
Complementing robust architectural details, the interior is sleek and expansive, while warmth is drawn from a foundational palette of walnut and the warm tones of limestone. A series of pivoting timber blades allow the entry foyer to be made private or opened to the living room. Bringing the warmth of timber without detracting from the architectural lines, the blades add complexity through the rhythm of shadow lines and form.
Textural shifts within a reduced material palette delineate areas, while the generous proportions of the home have allowed materials to be explored with drama. Continuing the stone used on the exterior to the interior, a rich striated silver travertine makes a dramatic statement. The underground bar alludes to cues of a gentleman’s club. Dark and moody with intricately detailed joinery, this space is a destination point removed from the family zones above. With the use of an abstracted city-scape wallpaper, the bar maintains its sophistication while connecting to its location and surrounding context.
